Frequently asked questions

Do I have to be referred by a doctor or specialist?

No, you can contact arbutus psychology directly via email or phone to make an appointment. No referral is necessary, although referrals from physicians or other health professionals are also accepted.

Are sessions in-person or conducted via videoconference?

In response to Covid-19, the College of Psychologists of Ontario has initiated a directive that psychological services included assessment and treatment sessions should be conducted virtually whenever possible. At present, MOST arbutus psychology services are offered via videoconference and we are slowly returning to in-person service as public health directives indicate that it is safe to do so. Please be in touch with Dr. Walpole directly to inquire whether in-person services will be available to you.

What is the cost of a session?

Sessions are typically 50 minutes in length and cost $200 (the initial session can be longer if assessment is required in which case rates are $250/75 minutes). These rates are in line with recommendations from the College of Psychologists.

Are psychologists’ fees covered by insurance?

Much of the time if you have extended health benefits, psychologists' fees will be partially or fully covered. Please check with your insurance carrier directly to be sure.

Is there a waitlist for services with arbutus psychology?

At this time the waitlist is CLOSED for adult services. There is a 3-4 month waitlist for child and adolescent services.  If you would like to be notified when the waitlist reopens, please contact Dr. Walpole by email: info@arbutuspsychology.com

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

A practicing psychologist is trained to assess and diagnose problems in thinking, feeling and behaviour as well to help people overcome or manage these problems.

Psychologists help people to overcome or manage their problems using a variety of treatments or psychotherapies (e.g., CBT).

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who go on to specialize in mental health and mental disorders. Psychiatrists often use medication to help their  patients manage their mental disorders and there are some disorders for which medications are necessary.

What is the cancelation policy?

We ask that you provide at least 24 hours of notice if you need to cancel or change your appointment. In the event of a late cancelation or 'no-show' (in non-exceptional cases), clients will be charged the full amount of the session ($200).
